The practice of skull binding has been prevalent across the world for thousands of years. Contemporary anthropology will attribute this phenomenon to convergent cultural adaptations arising independently in respective areas throughout the world. The practice usually involves the deformation of infants’ heads from birth using wooden platforms and ropes to constrict the undeveloped cranium. This process takes many years until a desired aesthetic is produced. In many of the ancient cultures that practice skull binding, the desired aesthetic is an elongated head, which for many cultures signified intelligence and high social status. The phenomenon has been found to have occurred in ancient Egypt, Mesoamerica, South America, Central Asia, and Europe. Skull binding dates back thousands of years, but remained prominent in some parts of the world until very recently. Scholars and academics believe to understand the fundamental reasons for this practice, yet there are many mysteries surrounding this ancient ritual that have not been conclusively solved. In addition to this, the consistency of this practice across the world has not been examined from an open-minded perspective by mainstream archeologists and anthropologists. In this video I will attempt to dissect the global phenomenon of skull binding and shed light on its origins and possible connectivity.
