The latest release from Foursquare distillery is the 2009 vintage - Mark 17 (XVII). Aged at origin (tropical) in Barbados for 12 years and represents another fantastic and limited (30,000 bottles) vintage. Priced at circa £60-£70 and released annually, this is a good opportunity to try the latest expression by Richard Sesle. Now for the scores: Foursquare ECS 2007 Vintage (89 points) Foursquare ECS 2008 Vintage (91 points) Foursquare ECS 2009 Vintage (90 points) All 3 rums were high performers especially in aroma, intensity and mouthfeel where they are very inviting and leave a long, flavoursome and velvety feeling in your mouth on all sips. Foursquare 2008 just pipped the other two by a point as I felt it was slightly more complex and rounded but we really are clutching at straws here - there is very little fault for any of them based on a 12yo rum costing less than £100. If you’re looking to get into higher abv rums then this is a good place to start. It would be interesting to try the Foursquare 2005 as this won the supreme spirit awards beating, amongst others, whisky contenders.
