Carrington Hospital / Unitech: Building One, Basement level - Research Sessions 2015 - 2025

For around two decades, paranormal research entity, Paranormal NZ has returned multiple times per year to further explore and document the many buildings and structures scattered across this vast, historic former psychiatric hospital complex. Our aim is to document not only the alleged paranormal claims that have surfaced from way back into the site's use as a hospital, but to spend enough time in these buildings to experience and hopefully record these occurrences firsthand, in real time. One building we have focused much of our attention on is the large, iconic main building, known simply as Building One. The team have covered nearly every section of this place, except, of course, those rooms locked off from public view. On November 21st, 2015, we were allotted a couple of hours of research time in Building One, which included time on the underground basement level. An incredible turn of events: down there, the building clearly showed its age. After this initial exploration, we've forever thought back to that time with some frustration. Since then, we haven't been able to regain access to that area. Until now. Unitech vacated in 2018, and since then, the entire complex has been left to deteriorate. Much of it has been demolished. Those that still stand are left open to vandalism, looting, and arson. We understand the plan is to revive the building, but after years since its closure, it doesn't appear that anything will be done other than demolition to build more unsightly apartment blocks and new roads. Doors and gates are left wide open; there is no signage, fencing is nonexistent, and security doesn't seem to care. Urban explorers visit nightly, and vandalism is evident all over. This video is a compilation of photos from our 2015 basement visit and footage from our two 2025 revisits. We do not make any claims of paranormal activity and are sharing this footage as archival reference material to document the building and our time there. Make of it what you will.
