Megan Elrod’s daughter, Rylee Faithe Ogles, was born with a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). CDH is serious birth defect where the diaphragm, the thin muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen, does not form completely. This caused Rylee’s stomach, spleen and intestines to intrude into her chest cavity, compressing her left lung. Megan originally planned for Rylee to born in Atlanta, but the Red Bank native is glad she chose Children’s Hospital at Erlanger. “I do not for one second regret my decision at all,” Megan says. “The surgeons, nurses, respiratory therapist, physical therapist - everyone was so great. They all went above and beyond to make sure Rylee survived. Only 50 percent of babies born with CDH make it, and because of Children’s Hospital at Erlanger my daughter was in that 50 percent.” The pediatric surgical team at Children’s Hospital performed an innovative minimally-invasive procedure on Rylee called a thoracsoscopic CDH repair. Through a few small incisions in her chest cavity, a digital viewing scope was used to guide delicate suturing instruments. This allowed doctors to move Rylee’s abdominal organs back into her abdominal cavity, and then close the hole in her diaphragm. “The surgery lasted four hours but she came out excellent,” Megan recalls. “Rylee is now five months old and you can barely tell she had surgery.” Learn more about Children's Hospital surgical services: https://www.childrensaterlanger.org/c...
