In this video, I take you through the bustling heart of Morocco's most nationalist city, and both the first and largest city you'll encounter within the Western Sahara Disputed Territory if you're heading south. To say that I was nervous to enter the disputed territory was an understatement - it's long been under a "Avoid Non-Essential Travel" advisory by the Government of Canada and other Western countries, meaning that I was travelling here without any travel insurance or consular assistance (that said, please check with your embassy or state department before travelling here!). However, despite the recent terrorist attacks that took place in Al-Smara in October 2023, and the rocket attacks at the southern Guergarat border with Mauritania in January 2021, the Moroccan authorities have managed to maintain a high degree of security, and you're not likely to encounter any issues during your travels here - I felt safe during my entire visit. Laayoune (also spelled El Aaiun) is the largest city in the Western Sahara, and it makes for a pleasant stopover en route south to West Africa. The city is well-developed, safe, and features a variety of restaurants, hotels, and comforts to help you recharge before your long journey south across the Sahara (there's even a real McDonald's here, along with a fake Starbucks, but it's the though that counts!). With Morocaan police and UN peacekeepers patrolling the streets, you can explore the city with confidence and enjoy everything Laayoune has to offer. Join me as I explore the city's massive Place du Mechouar (likely one of the strongest displays of Moroccan nationalism that you'll see in the country) along with the many cranes that dot the downtown area as Morocco's focuses on building Laayoune into one of its most important urban centres. Afterwards, join me as I take you to one of the last remaining vestiges of Spanish rule in this former colony, touring the impressive Laayoune Cathedral, still actively hosting Catholic worshippers since its founding by Spain during the colonial period. To say Laayoune is fascinating would be an understatement - the city lies at the crossroads of Moroccan culture, Spanish history, and the nebulous future that comes with being situated within a UN-monitored disputed territory.
