Gangotri glacier is about 30 kilometres long and 2 to 4 km wide and it is surrounded by several Himalayan mountains like Gangotri groups (Shivling, Thalay Sagar, Meru, and Bhagirathi peaks) and Chaukhamba and Kedarnath. Snout of #GangotriGlacier is known as Gaumukh and considered as holy place, 20 Km down the line from Gangotri glacier there is a famous shrine of Godess Ganga know as a “ Gangotri Dham”. This Hindu pilgrimage is one of the four pilgrimage of Uttarakhand. #GangaRiver is the longest river of India which is 2,525 Km long , its emerges from the Gangotri Glacier situated in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, India at the height of 4000 meter form the mean sea level. Water of Ganga river is considered as holy and pious. It is believed that a person get rid of from his all sins, if he /she took dip in the water of holy River Ganga. After completing her journey of 2,525 km Ganga River fall into Bay of Bengal at Ganga Sagar (west Bengal). Gangotri Dham is 500 Km from Delhi(International Airport) and 250 Km form Dehradun (Domestic Airport) /Railway station. Gangotri Glacier is melting very fast- NASA, in conjunction with scientists from United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), is developing a global inventory of all the world's glaciers to help researchers track each glacier's history. According to them, the Gangotri glacier, currently 30 km long and between 0.5 and 2.5 km wide, is one of the largest in the Himalayas. Due to Global Warming this glacier has been constantly receding. Data for 61 years (1936–96) show that the total recession of Gangotri glacier is 1147 m, with the average rate of 19 m per year. However, over the last 25 years it has retreated more than 850 meters (34 meters per year), and 76 meters between 1996 and 1999 (25 meters per year).
