Here is my contribution to engineering! I started out as a Mechanical Engineer from @bruneluni and then continued on to develop #CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations within buildings. I worked on improving the algorithms used to make #buildings more #sustainable and to run them more efficiently. When engineers design the engineering for buildings (such as the ventilation and heating systems), the only way to test their ideas is to re-create scale models and cross their fingers that it they will work well in real life. This often means that they have to over-design to ensure they work well for all environmental conditions. As computational power has increased over the years, computer simulations have been the best way to predict how buildings will behave. I helped to develop these simulations to ensure that they were running accurately and realistically. Put simply, it takes a huge amount of computational power to calculate how building materials respond, vs how air responds to environmental changes. I developed techniques to calculate these responses simultaneously - using some creative and novel techniques. It took me 4.5 years to research and prove my techniques, which I wrote up into a thesis and earned a doctorate. Apparently, engineers have continued to build upon my research, while I went off to make other areas of STEM accessible and entertaining through the media. I will always have a soft spot for computational fluid dynamics. It was my focus for the first several years of my career, until I turned to a media career, full-time. One of the projects being my book, Engineers Making a Difference features 46 inspiring engineers who are making a difference in the UK. You’ll discover how engineers from different backgrounds and with different experiences and skills have come together to create innovative solutions that benefit society as a whole. Engineers are under-cover superheroes that play a crucial role in society.
