The Ibar River

The Ibar River is not only a witness to the significant events of the past, but to the turbulent events of the present as well. The Ibar River has the most famous bridge in the world, on the Ibar in Kosovska Mitrovica. The Ibar bridge in Mitrovica has been a symbol of division and separation since 1999. The bridge has become a cultural symbol of the division of Kosovo, by separating Kosovo Albanians in the south from the Serbs in the north of the city. In the immediate vicinity, on its south side, a large monument to Isa Boletini was erected, facing towards the north, and on the north side, a monument to Emperor Lazar was erected, facing to the south, the two seeming as mutual threats of the two ethnic communities. The absurdity lies in that Isa Boletini is renowned as a person who collaborated with Serbs, while Emperor Lazar was allied with Albanians in the Battle of Kosovo of 1389. There are barricades on the Ibar bridge which block off the beautiful bridge to traffic. The first barricades were set up by the NATO allied forces which have been present in Kosovo since 1999 in order to establish peace between Serbs and Albanians.
