Gymnothorax flavimarginatus do not have these covers so they have to use their mouths to orally pump water through the gills. Their pharyngeal teeth are backwards pointing making prey impossible to escape its grasp. G. flavimarginatus have very poor vision. They rely on chemoreception to catch their food. The large nostrils also aid in sensing what is around them. During the day moray eels are less active and most commonly seen hiding in holes and crevices with just their heads protruding.They are much more active for hunting after sunset.
