Here are their translations and what they were used for: Mèches soufrées → Sulfur wicks Burned inside barrels or jars to disinfect, sterilize and preserve wine. Broux de noix → Walnut stain / walnut husk extract A natural brown dye used for wood, leather and textiles. Brussiate rouge → Red prussiate (ferricyanide) A chemical once used in dyeing fabrics, pigments and early photography. Colophane → Rosin Pine resin for varnishes, soaps, sealing wax and also violin bows. Sel marin → Sea salt Essential for preserving food and cleaning. Oxyde de zinc → Zinc oxide Used in skin ointments, cosmetics and as a pigment in paint. Chaux de Vienne → Vienna lime / Vienna white A fine powder for polishing metals, cleaning and as a gentle abrasive.
