This is my retrospective review of Final Fantasy VI, a Japanese RPG originally released in 1994 for the Super Famicom (known as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System or SNES in the West). In this in-depth retrospective, I’ll show you what Final Fantasy VI was like, how it built upon and changed the formula from the previous games in the series, and how it offered more freedom than ever before, but sometimes struggled to balance it against a linear narrative.
