K. Lee Scott has emerged as one of America’s foremost composers of music for the church. He earned two degrees in choral music from the University of Alabama School of Music, where he also studied composition. The first three stanzas of the text for “Gracious Spirit, Dwell with Me” were written by Thomas Lynch, while the last stanza was written by K. Lee Scott specifically for this anthem. The tune is from the Paris Processional of 1697, where it was paired with a Neo-Gallican processional text for the Feast of Corpus Christi, “Adoro te supplex,” a variation of “Adoro te devote,” which is usually attributed to Thomas Aquinas. Scott’s two-part arrangement treats the voices differently for each of the four stanzas. The first stanza features the voices in unison, the second features the women singing the tune, the third features the men singing the tune, and the fourth begins with the tune in canon at the octave between the women and men. Gracious Spirit, dwell with me, I would gracious be; Help me now thy grace to see, I would be like thee; And, with words that help and heal, thy life would mine reveal; And, with actions bold and meek, for Christ my Savior speak. Truthful Spirit, dwell with me, I would truthful be; Help me now thy truth to see, I would be like thee; And, with wisdom kind and clear, thy life in mine appear; And, with actions brotherly, speak Christ’s sincerity. Holy Spirit, dwell with me, I would holy be; Show thy mercy tenderly, make me more like thee; Separate from sin, I would and cherish all things good, And whatever I can be give to him who gave me thee. Mighty Spirit, dwell with me, I would mighty be; Help me now thy power to see, I would be like thee; Against all weapons hell can wield, be thou my strength and shield; Let thy word my weapon be, Lord, thine the victory. -stanzas 1-3, Thomas T. Lynch (1818-1871), alt. -stanza 4, K. Lee Scott
