Oceanspray, or ironwood is very hard and dense, and makes really great bow wood when dry. This bow ended up pulling around 45# at full draw. Finding oceanspray trunks large enough for a bow is difficult, since it is usually just big enough for arrows and atlatl darts. It tends to crack if the wood is carved fresh instead of dry, but that cracking can be minimized by carving down to the pith in the center of the stave. Carving green makes it much easier with simple tools, and once thinned and debarked, the wood dries rapidly in fair weather. Any cracking that occurred in this bow is superficial. This method works for most bow woods, especially white woods which can be force dried over heat to dry through in only hours. After drying for a few days in the shade, the belly of the bow was fire hardened to increase compression strength while recurve was set into the whole bow to increase draw weight and recoil speed. Tillering was done with a handmade knife, available using the link below. Dry oceanspray wood scrapes very nicely because of its unique dense grain structure. The belly of each limb is scraped until the limbs bend as evenly as possible so no strain is concentrated, but instead spread out across the whole bow. The string is made from sinew from deer and elk backstraps. These long collagen threads make a very durable bowstring, though it will stretch in damp weather. This bow shoots very well and will be used for deer hunting this fall. Because of fire hardening and careful tillering, it has taken no string follow after 100+ shots. Small cracks appear along the length of the back in dry weather, which was a result of the quick drying. So far, this bow has held up in spite of this.
