Hiking after ankle fusion in icy conditions is risky at the best of times — but doing it with a fused ankle adds a whole new level of challenge. I’ve lived with ankle fusion for over 20 years, and in this video I head out on a winter hike with my dog to see how a fused ankle really handles ice, uneven ground, and slippery trails. To make things even more interesting, I’m actually wearing my mountain biking shoes, because my new hiking boots were aggravating my fused ankle — not ideal on ice, but sometimes you have to adapt. This isn’t about pushing through pain for the sake of it. It’s about learning what works, what doesn’t, and finding ways to stay active despite long-term injury and limitations. If you’re dealing with ankle fusion, arthritis, chronic pain, or mobility issues — or you’re just curious what this kind of hike is really like — this one’s for you. 📍 TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 A wintry morning on the South Downs 1:00 Why the chalk paths are so slippery 1:45 The gear: Mountain bike shoes vs. Hiking boots 2:45 Ankle update: Hiking with a fused ankle 3:22 Avoiding the treacherous "shortcut" 4:28 Almost skiing!
