Tenement Jazz Band & Nanna Carling In Chamberlain Square at Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival' About the Band Tenement Jazz band are a traditional jazz band formed in early 2018 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Brought together by their shared love of New Orleans music, and comprising musicians from various corners of Edinburgh’s vibrant jazz scene, they are on a journey of exploration back to the roots of the music that they play. Their aims are to capture the raw energy and excitement of the early jazz recordings, to find and revive lesser-heard songs and cultivate their own interpretations of these, all in order to captivate experienced jazzers, dancing persons, and uninitiated ears alike. In their brief existence so far they have performed at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow Jazz Festivals, collaborated with various musicians via their own Cellar Session residency, and performed their own hit show on the Edinburgh Fringe telling the story of the ‘Red Hot Roots of Jazz’ from turn of the century New Orleans and beyond. Nanna Carling The soprano saxophonist, singer and composer Nanna Carling has, through hundreds of live performances in just a few years, made herself widely known for her energetic stage presence, crystal-clear musicality and sparkling charisma. With inspiration from icons such as Sidney Bechet, Billie Holiday and Johnny Hodges, Nanna stylishly and passionately delivers the musical traditions of jazz to both new fans and already die-hard enthusiasts. Every performance is a real happy pill - with high energy and contagious joy of playing! Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival Running since 1985, The Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival is England’s longest-established jazz and blues festival and one of Europe’s biggest free jazz parties. The festival regularly presents more than 200 performances alongside workshops, talks, exhibitions and masterclasses, and almost all of it is free to attend. Performances take place in shopping centres, streets and squares, bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels, art galleries, markets, libraries, parks, railway stations, canal boats, and sometimes even on buses and trains! The Festival is organised by Big Bear Music, probably the UK’s longest running independent record label and booking agency.
