Strict lockdowns seemed to be the only implementable option. Needed time to beef up infrastructure to fight Covid-19. PM made the right choice calling for nationwide lockdown in March 2020. Economic recovery post sharp decline has been very good. Much of the decline in annual GDP comes from Q1 FY21. India has done pretty well given the available resources. Important to note that death rate is amongst the lowest in India. Threat of infections has reappeared in states with large proportion of eco activity. The government is doing the right things to manage the economy. Government right in not going whole hog in fiscal expansion. Fiscal expansion would not have translated to real expenditure, says Arvind Panagariya, Former VC, Niti Aayog.
