Dr. Andrew Tseng, an Assistant Professor of Medicine in Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and Dr. Fadi Shamoun, an Associate Professor of Medicine in Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ, examine the results of their study appearing in the May 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where in a cohort of over 33,000 participants, they found a relationship between abnormal ankle-brachial index testing results and atrial fibrillation. They also found stroke and all-cause mortality were secondary outcomes after atrial fibrillation. Their study confirms previous conclusions and notes that peripheral artery disease and atrial fibrillation share numerous risk factors, potential pathophysiological mechanisms, and resultant cardiovascular outcomes.
