The future for Dublin's Dart is here!, mainline testing has now begun on Irish Rail's brand new Dart unit from Alstom’s new X’trapolis fleet of trains. The trains are being built at Alstom’s Chorzów facility near Katowice in Poland, Irish Rail has committed to 185 carriages from Alstom, which are due to enter service from early 2026 onwards. The trains were purchased in two orders as part of a framework agreement which provides for up to 750 electric/battery electric carriages over a ten-year period. Dynamic testing has now commenced, the train will operate between Park West & Hazelhatch most nights for the foreseeable future, before eventually conducting tests on other lines. This was also the first ever electric train to visit Hazelhatch, and also the first ever electric train to go beyond Inchicore Works. As the first train in a brand new fleet on the Iarnród Éireann network, the train will now begin a rigorous regulatory approval, and testing and commissioning process, at Inchicore Works and on the Greater Dublin Area rail network. Each 10-carriage train, made up of two of these five car train sets joined, will be the longest train size operable by the new fleet on current infrastructure, and will have capacity for at least 1,100 people. More carriages will arrive steadily over the coming months, with each set undergoing the testing and commissioning process. Please feel free to comment, like & subscribe.
