My Favorite Haunted Town in America: Eureka Springs

OBSCURIST TOURIST - One of my top 3 cities in the United States is also one of the least known - if you live outside of the Ozarks that is. Eureka Springs, Arkansas is one of those towns that lives deep in the pages of a Stephen King novel. It's got amazing history, architecture, and its fair share of ghost stories. In fact, Eureka Springs just might be one of the most haunted towns in America. The entire city is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also home to two of the most haunted hotels in the United States in the 1886 Crescent Hotel up on the top of the hill and its sister dwelling Basin Park Hotel at the bottom on Spring Street. Incorporated in 1880, Eureka Springs became known for its springs - which were said to contain healing properties. Within 10 years, it became the second-biggest city in Arkansas proper - thanks to an inundation of visitors hoping to heal from various ailments. Of course, the healing waters weren't all that they were cracked up to - thanks to a quack doctor who moved into town.
