Indian nationalist circles between 1935 and 1937, following the suspension of the Civil Disobedience Movement. The central disagreement revolved around the future direction of the movement, offering three main perspectives: Mahatma Gandhi's focus on constructive work in villages, a new group of Swarajists advocating for council entry and parliamentary engagement to maintain political interest, and the growing Left trend, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, who pushed for the continuation of mass struggle and a socialist-Marxist ideology centered on class issues. Nehru specifically challenged the Gandhian strategy of "Struggle–Truce–Struggle" (S-T-S'), preferring a strategy of permanent confrontation until victory (S-V). Ultimately, Gandhi mediated the conflict by permitting Congressmen to participate in elections, while affirming that true freedom would only come through mass consciousness, as the British, simultaneously, enacted the Government of India Act of 1935 to integrate and weaken the nationalist movement. #india #history #freedom #freedomfighter
