Kolkata's Memory Keeper: Prithwish Daw Interview on 'Zameen - A City in Layers' | Abhivyakti City Art Project, Ahmedabad What if the walls around you could speak? 🎧 Dive deep into the architecture, memory, and history of Kolkata with celebrated artist Prithwish Daw in this exclusive interview from the Abhivyakti Art Project in Ahmedabad! Watch him reveal the fascinating process behind his award-winning installation, 'Zameen - Calcutta: A City in Layers.' 🌆 Prithwish Daw: The Architect of Memory in 'A City in Layers' Kolkata-based artist Prithwish Daw is a quiet yet profound chronicler of the urban landscape. His artistic practice, a delicate excavation of time and memory, focuses on the soul of old Calcutta—its colonial history, lived lives, and the decaying architectural remnants that serve as accidental archives. Daw is a graduate of the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship and Rabindra Bharati University, and his works have been featured in major national and international venues, including the Kochi Student Biennale and the Lalit Kala Akademi National Exhibition. The Profile: An Artist of Texture and Time Daw's identity as an artist is deeply rooted in the materiality and atmosphere of his city. His muse is often North and Central Kolkata, where weathered facades, crumbling plaster, and faded textures narrate a history that is constantly being overwritten. His works are unique, utilising a material vocabulary that includes elements like plywood, marble dust, brick powder, lime mortar, and acrylics. This choice of materials transforms his pieces into tactile, textured portraits of an evolving metropolis. The Installation: Zameen - Calcutta: A City in Layers The installation, "Zameen - Calcutta: A City in Layers," reimagines the city as a "living palimpsest,"a concept where every surface is a layer—written upon, erased, and rewritten. Key Themes: Material as Memory: Daw uses materials salvaged from old, demolished buildings—the very physical fragments of the city’s past—to construct his art, imbuing it with authentic historical resonance. By bringing the physical and historical layers of Kolkata to Abhivyakti, Prithwish Daw compels us to look closer at the walls around us, recognizing them not just as structural necessities, but as complex records of human existence.
