#TBT to my comedic tv debut, going full Newyorican as 'COOKIE' 💅 A never seen treat from the archives of Fox of all places. Where a Latina performer named @Daphnerubinvega already becoming a star and this young newly graduated Italorican actress named Natascia Diaz got to spend a few episodes on this edgy sketch show. While the great @johnleguizamo was and remains a powerful comedic mouthpiece for Latinos, emmy nominated HOUSE OF BUGGIN lasted only one season. This was so fun, and there is a place for this color of depiction, especially on a comedy show! But if I were honest I watch these with a mix of immense pride and a big sigh, remembering seeing the typecasting writing on the wall; this was such a great credit to have, as all the calls I got to play Latin characters at that time were, but I quickly began to regret I didn't change my last name; that combined with most of the projects I was going out for, that being cast primarily to inhabit Latin stereotypes for the rest of my path, me who doesn't speak Spanish, who is actually equally Italian, and who identifies as more Italian than 'Diaz' would suggest, who knew she belonged in Chekovian and Shakespearean seas, this looming inevitability of the restriction of my path was something I would try to navigate and resist with all my talent and soul, along with every single other PerformerOC. I use it here, but like the surface insufficiency of most labels, that label even now still doesn't feel right on me. I realise my story is perhaps different than most others. And I celebrate and lift all cultures in my work. But I am not a color. I have this among many other colors in my pallete that I paint with as an actor.
