Imhotep vs. Sety I in The Mummy 1999: Sety I vs. Imhotep | Egyptologist Reacts

The Mummy from 1999, is a straight up banger. It's an excellent example of the fantasy adventure genre, similar to Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider, and it includes memorable characters, great special effects, and just really fun set pieces. The film starts with an extended prologue in which Imhotep, the high priest, murders his pharaoh, Sety I, and is subsequently condemned to be buried alive and become the titular mummy. The introduction to the film actually includes quite a lot that we can discuss from an archeological, historical, and Egypt to logical perspective. I'm not here to tear the film apart and say this is inaccurate, that is inaccurate. First and foremost, it's a fantasy film. It is for fun, and it is supposed to be entertaining above all. But even a film as lighthearted as this includes a surprising amount of background information, which you can see in the way sets are designed, costumes are created, and the characters themselves. So I thought it would be fun to go through the film's prologue and see how the historical figures match up to genuine real-life people, and see what elements of the set design, costuming, and the overall tone tell us about this film's version of Ancient Egypt. It's a really great film.
