Just a quick video showing my budget alternator conversion for my Mercruiser 170 (3.7 lt.) All the parts and materials cost less than $100 and are readily available from amazon and Ace hardware. This alternator is a 78amp ACDelco, but you could probably use any alternator you want with similar mounting holes. I forgot to mention in the video that I had to drill out the bottom hole on the alternator to fit the 7/16" bolt. It comes with a 3/8" hole. This design obviously will only work on models without power steering. Edit: I wound up changing the 7/16" x 6" bolt to a 1/2" x 6" bolt to add stability and strength to that main mounting point. To do this I had to tap out the hole in the cylinder head to 1/2" and I had to get a larger pipe for the spacer (I used a 3" long piece of galvanized water pipe with an inside diameter of 1/2".) Also, in hind sight, I should've used a marine grade alternator instead of the AC Delco (I actually didn't know there was a difference at the time I made this video.) This is the alternator I'm considering using instead: https://www.amazon.com/Electrical-Adr...
