Grafton, city and port, northeastern New South Wales, eastern Australia. Grafton is located 616 km north of Sydney and 313 km south of Brisbane via the Pacific Highway. Grafton is gracious rural city characterized by wide streets, elegant Victorian buildings, a superb location on the banks of the Clarence River. The site was first settled in 1838 by lumbermen who sought to exploit the area’s cedar forests. The city was proclaimed in 1885 and increased in size in 1956 through the merger of the municipalities of Grafton and South Grafton (both named for the duke of Grafton) on opposite banks of the river (bridged in 1932 with an unusual two storied rail and motor bridge). The beautiful purple-flowering jacaranda trees are an integral part of the image of Grafton, and their flowering is celebrated in the famous annual Jacaranda Festival which originated in 1935 is Australia’s longest running floral festival. Jacaranda season is surprisingly brief, which only makes the experience more precious. Generally speaking, the purple blossoms start to show themselves in early-to-mid October. The second half of October sees the Jacaranda-lined streets and parks of Grafton look like something out of a dream, with the trees in full bloom. By early November, the roads and footpaths are carpeted in fallen purple blossoms.
