You might have seen this viral polyandry wedding — two brothers marrying the same woman. These three happy faces belong to the Himachal Pradesh’s Hatti tribe, the community which was granted the status of Scheduled Tribes (STs) by the Centre in 2022. This practice is called Jodidara — a centuries-old form of polyandry, where one woman marries multiple brothers. Why? In hilly regions where agriculture is key, this tradition helped keep land undivided and families united. It ensured survival and shared responsibility. It’s even linked to the Mahabharata, where Draupadi married the five Pandavas — hence sometimes also called ‘Draupadi Pratha’. But, is polyandry legal in India? Though Indian law does not permit polyandry. However, it allows for the protection of the customs and traditions of its many tribes. Now, the question is, should ancient customs adapt to modern realities, or be preserved as cultural heritage?
