Breast Density – What You Need to Know

WDIV Local 4 On June 1, 2015, Michigan joined more than 20 other states across the country requiring that a letter be sent following a mammogram if the patient has dense breasts. This is to inform the patient of their breast density and also encourage follow-up with their physician should the doctor recommend additional screening, especially if they are at high risk for breast cancer. Zeynep Yilmaz-Saab, M.D., breast radiologist at Karmanos, did a recent interview with WDIV Local 4 explaining breast density. Mammography is still the best way to screen for breast cancer. This new legislation is meant to inform those with dense breasts so they have the knowledge and tools needed to manage their breast health.
