Hey!!! The history of Indian murals starts in ancient and early medieval times, from the 2nd century BC to 8th - 10th century AD. The word 'mural' is derived from the Latin word 'murus' meaning wall. The Kerala murals are a symbol of natural beauty and grace, elegance and simplicity and pious devotion. Murals are done on specially prepared plastered walls. In olden days, royal palaces, houses and temples were all decorated with mural paintings. The earliest of the Kerala murals are located at Thirunandikkara temple in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Traditional murals used Panchavarna (5 colors) namely, red, yellow, green, black & white. These colors are prepared from vegetables and mineral pigments. Red is derived from red laterite, yellow is derived from yellow laterite, white from lime, black from oil lamp soot, and green from Neelamari plant which is squeezed and the extract is used after drying up to be mixed with Eravikkara (Gracinia morella). Iyyampullu or Kuntalipullu, grown by the riverbanks, is used for making brush for painting. The number of grass ends will decide the size of the brush.
