(25 Dec 2025) EGY TRADITIONAL DANCE SOURCE: ASSOCIATED PRESS RESTRICTION SUMMARY: LENGTH: 4:55 ASSOCIATED PRESS Luxor, Egypt - 20 December 2025 ++NIGHT SHOTS++ 1. Various of men performing tahtib, a traditional dance with sticks which draws its moves from a martial art 2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ahmad al-Shafei, director of the opening ceremony: “Many tahtib players are participating in this festival. Tahtib is an ancient game that we discovered through Pharaonic antiquities, specifically from the carvings on the walls of the temples and tombs of Beni Hassan. It is an ancient Egyptian game and a major part of Egyptian heritage. It has been practiced for a very long time and continues to this day, accompanied by the mizmar, which is also an ancient instrument." 3. Various of men performing tahtib, people watching performance 4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ahmad al-Shafei, director of the opening ceremony: “This festival is important because we present the game of tahtib and stick arts, whether through professional tahtib players or through our teams, the folk arts troupes of the General Authority for Arts and Culture, who also include tahtib in their performances." 5. Various of men performing tahtib 6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Saed Salem, Sohag resident: “Tahtib, as it is said, was originally a form of self-defense. Each family used to train its children so that in the event of conflicts between families, they would be able to defend themselves or their tribe. Tahtib is a self defense art, like karate. Just as karate is a self defence sport, tahtib in Egypt serves the same purpose." 7. Various of people watching performance ASSOCIATED PRESS Luxor, Egypt - 19 December 2025 ++DAY SHOTS++ 8. Various of Evon Asaad, and her trainer practicing tahtib during training session 9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Evon Asaad, Tahtib and sports trainer: “A woman holding the stick and playing tahtib like men? People used to think that we held the stick in traditional rural clothing merely as a performance. But when they saw us wearing sportswear and holding the stick as a combat weapon and a sport, not just a display, some people welcomed the idea and felt proud that a girl could learn and practice sports such as tahtib, like a boy. Others, however, still believe it is a right reserved only for men." 10. Various of girls performing tahtib with sticks during training session 11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mirna Majed, 15-years tahtib trainee: “As girls, we wanted to try it. Truly, tahtib is a beautiful sport. It increased our self-confidence and taught us to believe in ourselves, to learn how to defend ourselves, and not to underestimate our abilities, that we can do anything just like any young man." 12. Various of trainees during tahtib session 13. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Kermina Hani, trainee: “I have a strange and special feeling. It is something new for me to be a girl who practices tahtib, and the way people look at me like 'Wow. How can you hold the stick, strike, and engage in combat with boys?' It is a wonderful experience." 14. Various of girls preforming tahtib during the session STORYLINE: Part sport, part traditional dance, tahtib was at the forefront of a cultural festival in the Egyptian city of Luxor. Performers took to the stage appearing to fight with long wooden sticks, and a rhythm attuned to music. The art form traces its roots back to Ancient Egypt and draws its moves from a martial art. Sketches of the art form were carved on the Pharaonic walls of temples and tombs at Beni Hassan, a cemetery in Middle Egypt.
