A Trip to the National Archives of India | The Bose INA Files | CSS Level B Training | ISTM

As part of our Level B Training (136th Batch), we had the opportunity to visit the National Archives of India on 12th January, 2023 for our State Citizen Interface Report. ▬ Contents of this video ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 0:00 - The Journey 0:52 - The National Archives of India 1:21 - Ground Floor 2:18 - 5th Floor - Repository Division 2:38 - 3rd Floor - Private Records 3:08 - 2nd Floor - Conservation Research Library 3:57 - Ground Floor 6:03 - Going Back We were to arrive at the National Archives of India at 10:30 AM. For this purpose, ISTM had already arranged a bus that was to take our group to the destination. We arrived at the National Archives of India at 10:26 AM. After the customary security check, we went through the lobby to the elevators and reached the Fifth Floor which housed the ‘Repository Division’ section. Here, we saw a magnificent collection of public records. These records have been systematically catalogued in the National Archives of India from the year 1748. Records from before the year 1748 are present but scattered. Some examples are the Gilgit Manuscripts, which remain undeciphered. There were also very old copies of the Bhagavad Gita, the Mahabharata and the Ramacharitamanas. No classified records are kept in the National Archives of India. Also, the National Archives of India never discards their records. On the 3rd floor, we went to the ‘Private Records’ section. These records were quite different from the first category that we saw on the fifth floor. We saw the FIR lodged in Gandhi ji’s murder, the diary of Lala Lajpat Rai, handwritten letters of Ramanujan etc The Bose INA Files may be seen at 2:58. They were located on the 3rd Floor Then, we went to the 2nd Floor. Certain offices of the Ministry of Culture like their Budget Section are located here. However, we entered the ‘Conservation Research Library.’ Here, we were given a detailed lecture about how the records are preserved using the best and latest methodologies of record management. The National Archives of India does not recreate damaged records as they would not be original. Also, all the treatments that are used here are reversible and none of them have any permanent effect of altering the original record. We were then given a quick tour of the “Research Room” in the Ground Floor. Scholars from both India and abroad come here and study the records for their scholarly pursuits. We maintained strict silence in order to avoid disturbing their deep concentration. On the way out, we explored the historical artifacts in glass cases that were housed in the lobby. Our trip was over at 11:31 AM. After a quick goodbye, we headed our own ways. Our trip to the National Archives of India was both informative and engaging. Most of us had visited this magnificent institute during our Foundation Training Program. However, coming here a second time after seven years, with both practical and theoretical experience in Records Management, we saw everything with new eyes. We were able to grasp much more information out of this visit. This made it especially special and productive. Not to mention, most of us felt nostalgic. #adr #aso #tourism #travel #nationalarchives #istm #ssccgl
