Walking Tour of LiJiang Old Town LiJiang, YunNan, China 2024 April Lijiang Old Town is located in Lijiang City, Yunnan Province, China, covering an area of 7.279 square kilometers. It was built in the late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty (13th century), flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and was once an important hub of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. It was listed in the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1997 and is the only ancient city in China selected as a town of ethnic minorities (Naxi). Dongba culture is the traditional culture of the Naxi people, and there is also the world's only surviving hieroglyphic "Dongba script". Dongba scriptures and sacrificial ceremonies are listed as the Memory of the World Heritage. Dongba scripture can be seen on the walls of the houses in the ancient city, and Dongba wishing wind chimes are hung everywhere, which entrust people's good wishes. The entire old city is an open layout without city walls (legend has it that because the chieftain's surname is "wood", it is unlucky to build a city like "trapped", which is built on the mountains and rivers, and is shaped like the Eight Diagrams. A typical "three squares and one screen wall" courtyard, civil structure, carved doors and windows, green tile sloping roof, integrating Han, Bai, Tibetan and other ethnic skills. The meltwater from Yulong Snow Mountain runs through the whole city, forming a pattern of "three rivers running through the city and water flowing in every house". 354 stone bridges are built across the stream, and it is known as the "Venice of the East". Lijiang Old Town is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also a microcosm of the spiritual home of the Naxi people. Its construction concept of "harmony between man and nature" (derived from the Dongba philosophy of "man and nature are brothers") provides precious inspiration for modern cities. Although the ancient city is obviously commercialized today, you can still touch the pulse of life flowing for thousands of years by going deep into the alleys.
