Is a Juvenile Court Adjudication a Conviction? Although both the adult and juvenile justice courts deal with criminal acts, in most jurisdictions, and certainly in FL, there are significant differences between the two Courts. The biggest difference is in theory: The adult criminal justice system is primarily designed to punish, whereas the juvenile justice system is fundamentally designed to rehabilitate... or at least it is supposed to be, but there are other differences as well. Like semantics - in adult court you have Defendants, bond, jury trials and sentencings, but in juvenile court you have Respondents, no right to bond, no jury involvement and what we call adjudicatory and disposition hearings. In FL a juvenile Court “adjudication” is a sentence imposed against a juvenile offender for an act of juvenile delinquency, in a juvenile court following a finding of guilt by a juvenile court judge. Even though an adjudication is not a conviction, in reality, and for juvenile court purposes, it is. But, getting back to the question you asked... a juvenile delinquency adjudication is NOT a CRIMINAL conviction. In fact there’s a specific FL Statute that says so (that would be F.S. 985.35(6)). And, as an aside, in FL juvenile court proceedings - including the dispositions - are supposed to be (“supposed to be”) confidential. Thank you for your question. I appreciate your having asked it.
