RetinaRounds™ 153: Bimanual Dissection

Bimanual dissection is sometimes necessary to dissect tightly adherent membranes off the retinal surface. This is particularly true when the retina is detached and the the lack of counter traction makes elevation of membranes more challenging. Today we will show you a case performed by an anonymous senior vitreoretinal fellow, who repairs a combined tractional and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment using a bimanual approach. The case highlights the importance of dissecting in the proper surgical plane as well as the angle and direction of instruments to make this technique safer and more efficient. This is a very challenging case and we want to thank this fellow for sharing it and giving us an opportunity to learn more about this surgical technique!
