In this edition of Instant Analysis, USCFootball.com reporters Jack Smith and Dan Weber discuss USC's 56-10 throttling of Stanford in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The 106th (and final as PAC-12 league mates) meeting between these two teams went just about as perfectly as possible for USC. With a flurry of offensive scores, defensive takeaways, and special teams magic the Trojans put together one of the greatest halves of football in school history, icing the game by halftime with a 49-3 lead. Jack and Dan talk about their biggest takeaways from the game and break down what went into USC's inspired play in all three facets of the game. The two first spoke about their reactions to USC's early onslaught highlighted by a marvelous Caleb Williams rushing touchdown and a Max Williams interception that led to another offensive score. They also note the impact of the sold-out crowd which made it clear to Stanford from the start that it would not be a fun night. Dan and Jack also get into USC's team chemistry which allowed each side of the ball to feed off of each other. When USC would score, the defense would respond with excitement and get the ball back for the offense. When the defense got a stop, the offense would immediately put up more points. The icing on the cake was a 75-yard punt return touchdown by freshman wide receiver Zachariah Branch that set the Coliseum ablaze long before the peristyle torch would be lit. Dan shared his thoughts on Lincoln Riley's offensive scheme before getting into the defense's successful night in which they forced three takeaways and allowed just one late touchdown -- which Lincoln Riley still won't concede. In closing, Jack and Dan speak on USC's "merciless approach" and "killer instinct," two things that have not been associated with Trojan football for years. USC didn't let the sentiment of its final PAC-12 opener get in the way of a win, smoking Stanford from kickoff to the final whistle. The Trojans are now 3-0 and roll into next week on a bye before heading to Tempe to take on Arizona State.
