NOTE: In the video, I mistakenly say the cable is 12awg...it's not, it's 10awg (which is better from an efficiency standpoint) In this video, I discuss some of the basics about PV cables and the most common connector, MC4. There's a lot of things that being new to the solar game, I didn't understand at first. Using proper photovoltaic (PV) cables and was one of them. The MC4 connector was another. I made this video to explain how PV cables are critical to your solar panels mentioning the two most common gauges (10awg vs 12awg) . I also cover how that, for most people's home setup, especially if they're not high voltage/amperage...you probably won't see too much of a real world difference between the two. More important that the gauge of cable, I believe the most important thing is selecting a good supplier of cables and connectors. Buying quality PV cable is expensive and you might be tempted to cut corners and just find the cheapest option out there, I recommend against that. If you get a cable with a shoddy MC4 connector that has a short in it (loose connection), you can see it melt down on you and potentially causing a dangerous situation. In this video, I'm using a 10awg PV cables from Bateria power, I've used them before and have never had any issues with their cables or parts. You can also buy them on Amazon which I like because I know there is a rock-solid return/warranty policy on them and ultra-fast shipping. I also cover how to properly install the MC4 connectors so that you can size your cable to your length needs. Lastly, you might ask yourself if you can just use THNN (Barnwire) or even externally rated Ferrowire for your solar panels and the answer is...well I guess it's technically possible, PLEASE DON'T! The MC4 connectors are intended for PV cable which has thicker insulation around it and the washers won't seal properly without the right type of insulated cable going into it. So technically those cables (THNN/Ferrowire) will conduct electricity (they are copper after all!), they won't provide adequate protection or weather sealing and you could wind up with a very unsafe setup. Good PV cable is a little expensive but worth the investment! I hope this helps! It might be Solar 101 for most people but I've found there's always time to cover the basics. https://amzn.to/4iOHkiA - Bateria Power PV Cable https://amzn.to/4iD5r48 - Bateria Power 100' 10awg Cable https://amzn.to/4c0fbmy - Bateria Power Combined 20' PV Cable
