Thanks to Jared ‪@CurrentlyRockhounding‬ (he gave her a heads up about the listing on Craigslist), Kate has a new lapidary tool designed to make face-polishing cut rocks and thundereggs a quick and easy job. The Richardson's High Speed Sander is designed to use silicon carbide sanding disks to create a mirror finish in a short amount of time. The five-minute time limit did create some hilarity, as Kate struggled to change out and center the velcro disks - but she persevered. She also discovered that crystal amethyst might not have been the best choice to show what this machine can do, as it has natural fractures and gaps between the crystals. Despite the hurdles and pitfalls, the result was a lovely display piece. The high-speed sander can be a dangerous tool, and should always be used with care. While wearing gloves for most machines can be a safety haard, Kate learned the hard way that gloves are a good idea for this whizzing, spinning sanding disk. Additionally, although the machine has a great dust collection system, wearing a dusk mask and hearing protection is crucial.
