Grace Wanjiru Hughes was born and raised in Bungoma, where she also attended school. After completing her studies there, she enrolled in college in Nairobi, though she was unable to finish her program. She later secured a job with a Chinese construction company that was building houses in Ruaka. During this time, a friend introduced her to a man who would become her boyfriend. She visited him at his home in Syokimau, and soon after they officially began dating. Before meeting him, however, Grace had been involved with another man who tried to persuade her to join a cult. He insisted on introducing her to his friends and claimed that he frequently visited a woman in Mombasa who performed disturbing rituals—such as sleeping in graves and summoning demons—in order to gain wealth. At first, Grace thought he was joking, but eventually she realized he was serious. Although her life had been steadily improving, things began to decline once she became involved with this cult-affiliated boyfriend. Her business started failing, and she gradually distanced herself from him. Throughout this difficult period, her faith in God gave her strength and courage, and she refused to live in fear. Later, the boyfriend she had met through her friend turned abusive. Small disagreements would escalate into violent fights, and Grace often had to flee to his friend’s house until he calmed down. He was narcissistic and struggled with anger issues. One day, after a particularly severe beating, Grace went to buy medicine. While there, she also took a pregnancy test and discovered she was expecting a child. She immediately called her father and asked to return home. Her family welcomed her back and cared for her until she gave birth. Afterward, Grace tried online dating in hopes of finding love. She met a man who promised to visit her in Kenya, but he revealed disturbing behavior—he claimed to be a “toilet slave” and demanded that she inform him whenever she needed to use the bathroom so he could consume everything. Shocked and disgusted, Grace cut off all contact with him. In 2021, Grace met the man who would become her husband. She shared her phone number with him, and one morning he called her. They spoke for nearly three hours, and their relationship blossomed. A few months later, he traveled to Kenya to meet her. Around this time, Grace’s child’s father passed away due to excessive alcohol consumption. When her new partner arrived in Nairobi, they spent time together before Grace introduced him to her parents. After three weeks, she discovered she was pregnant. His family doubted the child was his and demanded a DNA test, but sadly, Grace suffered a miscarriage. Despite this setback, their love endured. After he returned home, Grace became pregnant again. He rented her a house, bought her a car, and later helped her upgrade to a better one when she moved to Eldoret. Eventually, Grace and her husband relocated to the United States, where they held their wedding. Today, she lives happily with her family in New York. Grace shares her story to inspire others who may feel hopeless. She believes that God visits people in different ways, and her journey is a testimony of resilience, faith, and transformation.
