I think the important thing is that...we have been fighting the Abu Sayyaf in the southern part of the Philippines and they are terrorists. Whether or not they are connected to al-Qaida they are terrorists. They terrorise those two islands in the southwestern corner of our country. And now it is not a lonely fight anymore because there's an international coalition against terrorism, so I think that now in fact we'll be able to solve the problem sooner." 14. Wide shot of Arroyo STORYLINE: President George W. Bush is pledging U-S aid to help the Philippines wage its own fight with terrorism. Bush welcomed Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to the White House on Tuesday, where talks centered on efforts to deal with militant Muslim rebels in the southern Philippines. President Bush said he is willing to work with the Philippine leader in any way to help combat the rebels. One of those rebel groups, the Abu Sayyaf movement, has been holding two Americans hostage. Filipino soldiers have clashed with members of the rebel group in recent months in pursuit of the hostages. Bush said Arroyo expressed confidence that her military is capable of reigning in Abu Sayyaf. Still, he said, the U-S is ready to help her government make a stand against terror "in Afghanistan, or the Philippines or anywhere al-Qaida exists." During her U-S visit this week, Arroyo as yet has not confirmed reports that her government would seek further military hardware in their own fight against terrorism. Pressed by reporters on whether she wants helicopters and other equipment, she said "if that what is needed to make the partnership more efficient, yes." Now that the war on terror is backed by a global coalition, Arroyo said she believes her government's own struggle against rebel groups in the south will be resolved sooner.
