Discovering Lyveden New Bield & An Unusual Saxon Tower | A Hike Through England’s Lost History Hiking For Health - Promoting positive physical and mental health through a love of the outdoors. 📍 Starting Point: Brigstock Village Our walk begins in the charming village of Brigstock, nestled in the rolling countryside of Northamptonshire. Brigstock is rich in history, with roots stretching back to the Domesday Book. The quiet lanes, limestone cottages, and peaceful atmosphere set the perfect tone for a countryside hike. ⛪ St Andrew’s Church: A Rare Round Tower Treasure Before setting off through the countryside, we take a detour to visit St Andrew’s Church—a true hidden gem. What makes this church so unusual is its circular tower, a rare architectural feature in England, especially in this region. It’s similar in style to the Church of All Saints at Hough-on-the-Hill in Lincolnshire, with deep Saxon roots. The tower’s distinctive shape immediately draws the eye and adds a sense of mystery to the start of the walk. Inside, you’ll find remnants of medieval craftsmanship and centuries of local history. 🌲 Through Fermyn Woods Country Park Leaving the village, the route takes us into Fermyn Woods Country Park, a tranquil area of mixed woodland and open glades. This part of the hike is perfect for nature lovers. Depending on the season, you may spot butterflies, deer, or even hear the call of a woodpecker. The shaded woodland paths are ideal for walking, especially in summer. There are a number of well-marked trails in the park, but our route follows a gentle ascent toward Lyveden, weaving through ancient trees and peaceful clearings. 🏰 Destination: Lyveden New Bield Eventually, we emerge from the woods and fields to find one of England’s most haunting heritage sites: Lyveden New Bield. This unfinished Elizabethan garden lodge, built by Sir Thomas Tresham, was intended as a bold statement of faith and vision—but construction was halted after his death in 1605. Despite being incomplete, Lyveden is striking, with its symmetrical stone design and atmospheric setting. Surrounded by moats and orchards, it offers a powerful glimpse into England’s religious and political tensions of the 16th century. With history closely linked to the Gunpowder Plot it is a destination worth visiting. Today, the site is managed by the National Trust, and visitors can explore both the lodge and the surrounding garden landscape. 🚶♂️ Walk Summary Start Point: Brigstock village, Northamptonshire Route: Brigstock → St Andrew’s Church → Fermyn Woods → Lyveden New Bield Distance: Approx. 7-8 miles (depending on exact route) Terrain: Mostly flat with some gentle inclines through woodland and open fields Highlights: Rare circular tower church, Fermyn Woods wildlife, Lyveden New Bield ruins Best Time to Walk: Spring to autumn for the best weather and scenery 🎥 About This Video This video showcases one of our favourite hidden walks in the East Midlands.
