In this new video series, we explore some lesser known philosophers and play around with their ideas, attempting to get some value from them. Elbert Hubbard was an American philosopher who lived around the latter half of the 19th century. Philosophically he was a socialist but was also famous for championing the arts and crafts movement. This movement called for a return to personal involvement in creating something. We often find that art can sometimes feel manufactured and artificial, something extremely true today with A.I. generated art. Many things like cups or books are mass produced, sometimes entirely by machines. But the arts and crafts movement asks us to use our own hands and minds to become fully invested in our artistic endeavors, resulting in more meaningful art and experiences. Elbert Hubbard is most known for his short essay “A Message to Garcia” which espouses the virtues of duty, loyalty, and determination. This is a bit mysterious as the essay even calls for loyalty to your employer, something that might seem at odds with socialist ideology. Hubbard lived an adventurous life even creating a community dedicated to this arts and crafts lifestyle. He died on the famous RMS Lusitania, the ocean liner sunk by the Germans in World War I which was a major factor that lead to the US declaring war.
