Radical feminism emphasizes the patriarchal origins of inequality between men and women, more specifically on the ‘social subordination of women by men within the private and political spheres’. In the 1960s and 1970s, feminists that belonged to the mainstream women’s rights groups like the National Organization for Women believed that gender equality could be achieved by reforming the existing system with the aim to achieve equal rights for women. However, there were feminists who wanted to uproot patriarchal power structures instead of reforming the system. This group of feminists were termed as Radical feminists. As per their theory, women are subjected to oppression due to male supremacy, patriarchal social roles, and structural barriers. A patriarchal society is one in which all authority and privilege goes to men, including power and wealth. In comparison to other branches of feminism, radical feminism does not primarily promote equality of power. Instead, they set out to transform society by eliminating patriarchy from its roots. To be more specific, they wished to eliminate the traditional gender roles. In the 1960s, women have then won the right to vote and were working outside of the home more. In other words, though life for women may have improved over the past half-century, all women continued to experience oppression regularly in one or the other form. However, women still did not have reproductive rights and these issues was brought to the front by radical feminists through awareness-raising groups. Radical feminists reject the patriarchal ideal that women should devote their private spheres to childrearing, marriage, and household maintenance. In addition, women are harmed through prostitution, domestic violence and rape because of the patriarchal private sphere. Women centres and culture centres, focused on improving feminists’ spirituality, mothering, reproduction, and sexuality is one great achievement of Radical Feminism. Radical feminism has proven to be inspirational and empowering for many women since it began in the 1960s. Achievements • Reclaim the Night was a movement started by radical feminists to highlight the crimes against women committed at night at public places. They took to streets at night to protest. Influencers Andrea Dworkin, one of the most famous radical feminists brought a huge influence on radical feminism. She wrote 14 books, the foremost famous of which was Pornography: Men Possessing Women (1981). She is a strong feminist and is against men, claiming that women should dominate more than men. Mary Daly was another famous feminist who is an author and Professor. She argued that women are victims of men. Men deny women their political and economic power. On the other hand, Marilyn French, who believes traditional feminine characteristics are superior to masculine ones contend that one needs to reject the masculine traits and embrace the feminine qualities. Redstockings Radical Feminist group founded in New York in 1969 was a group formed by the radical feminists with the slogan “sisterhood is powerful”. They asserted that the existing male-dominated society is destructive and oppressive but can be changed by making sisterhood strong. One of the most famous protest was against the Miss America of 1968, organized by the Radical Women of New York. This event gave rise to the mythical image of the feminist burning her bra. At this demonstration, bras were not burned but tossed into a trash can along with high heels, eyelash curlers, cosmetics, wigs, and magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Playboy. Historically, this was a protest against what was seen as ridiculous standards of beauty imposed on women. Criticism One of the major criticism leveled against radical feminists are that they are transphobic. Some radical feminists have constantly worked to exclude issues and experiences of transgender community. These radical feminists are referred as TERFs, that is, trans-exclusionary radical feminists.
