Police on streets STORYLINE: Indian police and soldiers tried to control Hindu mobs in the western city of Ahmadabad on Saturday as the death toll approached 300 in India's worst religious violence in a decade. Hindu mobs set fire to homes and shops in a village in the western Gujarat state, burning to death at least 27 Muslims trapped inside, the latest mass killing in India's worst religious strife in a decade that has claimed more than 300 lives, officials said Saturday. The mob from an adjoining village stormed Sardarpura in Gujarat's Mehsana district Friday night and set the houses and shops on fire using cooking gas bottles, police said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Press Trust of India news agency said police fired bullets in the air to scare away the mob, which regrouped as soon as the police patrol left. The killings took the death toll in three days of carnage in Gujarat to 322 in the worst religious clashes in India since 1993, when 800 people were killed during Hindu-Muslim riots in Bombay. However, the rest of the country was relatively calm except for a few isolated incidents of violence. The Gujarat attacks happened even as thousands of army soldiers were deployed in the riot-torn state Saturday, and police claimed that mass murders had been quelled. The soldiers, with shoot-to-kill orders, fanned out in the worst hit cities of Ahmadabad, Baroda and Rajkot to control young Hindu men who looted and attacked Muslims with swords and sticks. The bloodshed was triggered by a Muslim mob burning of a train carrying Hindu nationalists on Wednesday in Godhra town in the state. Since then, right-wing Hindus have been on a retaliatory rampage in this large western state, burning down Muslim homes while many police and soldiers have stood by watching Muslims, including women and children, burned alive.
