Understanding the gun charges against missing mom Suzanne Simpson’s husband

Missing mom Suzanne Simpson’s husband, 53-year-old Brad Simpson, is still in the Bexar County Jail. He faces a federal gun charge on top of the two family violence charges he was originally arrested for. Defense Attorney Larry Dean Bloomquist says, according to the affidavit released by the ATF, several guns were taken from Brad Simpson's possession after a family member alerted police. The federal gun charge stems from a short barrel rifle, which is not illegal to own, but was not properly registered. "It is possible for someone to legally obtain one of those guns, but they would need to go through a registration process with the ATF and evidently that was not done." The process to register that rifle, Bloomquist says, is similar to registering gun silencers. Brad was also in possession of several silencers that Bloomquist speculates are properly registered since no charges stemmed from those.
