Having enjoyed making the prior F4F-4 video, we continue the theme of dogfight clips with a focus on the Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4. Being the fourth sub-variant of the "Emil" variant of the infamous 109, this sub-variant brought to the table a number of notable improvements over its predecessor sub-variant (i.e. the "E-3") which served to make the plane an even more potent adversary. Firstly, and perhaps most notably, the replacement of the Oerlikon derived 20mm "MG FF" cannon with the modified 20mm "MG FF/M" cannon which could fire the more lethal Minengeschoß shell. Additionally, later models of the E-4 received an uprated version of the Damlier-Benz DB601 engine known as the DB601N which was optimised for higher altitude performance (these models being designated as "Bf 109 E-4/N", and beginning to enter operational service in July 1940). Primarily seeing service in the Battle of Britain, the plane would meet its equal in the form of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Ia with the E-4 being enjoyed by its pilots in one of the greatest air battles of the war in the Western European threatre. This enjoyment translates nicely into War Thunder. Sitting at a Battle Rating of 3.0, the model we have in-game is the E-4/N which feels comfortable against most if not all of its adversaries. If you cannot better your foe in a particular aspect (e.g. turn circle; energy retention; dive speed etc.), you will likely have an advantage in a different aspect meaning success in this plane is just as much about knowing what it can do as it is about knowing what your opponent's aircraft can do. This encouragement of having a degree of flexibility in your flight-style can lead to a highly rewarding experience, and hopefully that is shown in this series of clips (albeit I may have recorded far too many clips for inclusion in this video!). That is not to say there are no potential drawbacks to the plane. The 20mm MG FF/M cannon can come across as a double-edged sword given their high explosive shells will cause major damage upon contact with a target in a short burst. However, getting shots on target can prove challenging for those not used to their low muzzle velocity; and with only 60 rounds per cannon you may find yourself out of ammo just as you are about to line-up the perfect shot! As a result, this naturally encourages you to run a closer convergence and take time in setting up your shots - time you may not always have mid-dogfight! Still, do not underestimate the large quantity of ammo you have in the nose mounted 7.92mm MG17 machine guns as those 1,000 rounds per gun can prove highly effectively when your cannon are empty!
