Join us for our 24 hours in Brasov, Romania travel guide as we highlight how best to spend limited time in the city. Often before we visit somewhere we have a general idea of what we're planning on doing when arriving; however, while heading to Brasov for the 1st time we had no clue. Our 24 hours spent in the city allowed us to cover most of the Old Town, do a bit of hiking and tuck into some delicious food before heading out for nightlife. With such time scarcity we tried to pack in as much as we possibly could. The following are some of the places we had a chance to visit in Brasov, Transylvania (Transilvania): 1) Council Square 2) Black Church 3) Biserica Neagra 4) Brasov Historical Center 5) Yekaterina's Gate 6) Rope Street 7) Citadel of The Guard 🏰 Exploring Brasov, Romania: Medieval Charm, Unique Food & Colorful Streets | Ultimate City Guide 🌄🇷🇴 🚆 Arriving in Brasov: Autumn Colors & Train Travel Our journey begins with a scenic train ride into the heart of Transylvania. The gentle rocking of the train lulls some of us to sleep, while others stay awake to capture the beautiful landscapes on film. The fall colors are just starting to pop, bathing the Romanian countryside in gold, orange, and red as we pull into Brasov’s historic town. 🍽️ First Stop: Lunch with a Hungarian Twist Hunger leads us straight to a local restaurant, which, to our surprise, turns out to be Hungarian rather than Romanian. The border between these two countries may be close, but so are their culinary traditions, making for a unique food experience. 🍞 Homemade Bread: Thick, crusty, and straight from the oven, the bread is warm and comforting. Its crispy exterior and soft, fluffy interior make it the perfect companion for the hearty meal to come. “It just needs some butter now,” we remark, savoring every bite. 🍲 Hen’s Soup with Semolina Dumplings: A steaming bowl arrives at the table, brimming with vegetables and featuring enormous semolina dumplings—so large, they dwarf the spoon. The dumplings are reminiscent of bread or polenta, and the soup is the ideal way to take off the autumn chill. 🥗 Cheese Salad & Goulash: The next course is a generous salad with a crumble of fresh, tangy farmer’s cheese—likely goat cheese, creamy and rich. Soon after, the highlight arrives: a bowl of Hungarian goulash, filled with tender chunks of meat, potatoes, and carrots. The broth is hearty, the flavor deep, and the meat so tender it melts in your mouth. It’s a warming, rustic dish perfect for a crisp day in the Carpathians. 🏙️ Strolling the Streets: Unplanned Adventures & Medieval Vibes With bellies full, we set out to explore Brasov on foot—without a strict itinerary, just the freedom to wander and discover. This spontaneous approach leads us down charming, cobblestone lanes, where every corner brings a new delight. 🏰 Medieval Ambiance: Instantly, Brasov feels more medieval and better preserved than Bucharest. Restored facades in pastel colors, centuries-old churches, and old city gates give the town an enchanting, fairy-tale atmosphere. Cafés and pubs line the streets, offering cozy spots to rest and people-watch. 🚲 Unique Finds: Pennyfarthings & Side Streets We stumble upon pennyfarthing bicycles—unrideable and attached to a bike rack, but fun to see and photograph. The city is full of quirky finds like this. 🚶♂️ Brasov’s Famous Sights: 🏘️ Narrowest Street: We make our way to the famously narrowest street in Brasov, just 1.3 meters at its slimmest. We try the classic tourist pose—touching both walls at once! These tiny alleys are not only fun for photos but also provide a quick escape from busier areas. 🏰 St. Catherine’s Gate & Medieval Fortifications: Moving on, we reach St. Catherine’s Gate, an impressive remnant of the town’s fortification system, standing as a symbol of Brasov’s rich history. Nearby, a mysterious statue of children feeding from a wolf adds a touch of folklore and curiosity. ⛰️ Climbing to the Fortress: Views & Missed Opportunities A morning bus ride had revealed a large fortress atop a hill, and after lunch, we decide to climb up and see it. The ascent offers spectacular panoramic views over the “new town” of Brasov—a perfect place for photos and a quick snack. Unfortunately, we arrive too late to enter the fortress itself, a recurring travel mishap that reminds us of the importance of checking opening hours. 🌃 Brasov by Night: Searching for Nightlife Evening descends and we’re ready to experience Brasov after dark. The city is quiet, especially for a Thursday night, but we’re determined to find where the locals gather. We wander through the city’s streets, on the hunt for open pubs and vibrant neighborhoods. While it’s not as lively as some European capitals, Brasov has a laid-back, inviting vibe that makes us feel at home.
