This public lecture represents a continuation of a previous talk, “Buddhism and Islam: Connections and Tensions in the 8th through 13th Centuries CE” (delivered 12 February 2025*). Please note that it does not presuppose familiarity with the earlier talk, or with Islam in general. We will begin by highlighting some salient points from the previous talk, particularly the evidence that Muslim communities were influenced by Buddhist architecture, philosophy, and narrative literature under the Abbasid Caliphate. With that in view, we will further discuss evidence for Buddhists’ and Muslims’ understanding of each other in the 8th through 13th centuries, with specific attention to the depiction of Muslims (mleccha-s) in chapters one and two of the Kālacakratantra. The second part of the lecture will briefly survey some of the groups—Sufi, Isma’ili, and Baul—who exhibit similarities with tantric Buddhist and/or Nāth siddha communities. The goal of this section is to provide tools for appreciating—and perhaps further research on—likely engagements between Buddhist and Muslim communities in the 8th through 13th centuries. Daniel McNamara earned a BA from Hampshire College, an MA from the University of Chicago Divinity School, and a PhD in West and South Asian Religions from Emory University (Atlanta, GA, USA). This talk is based in part on his PhD dissertation, “Nihilists and Noble Ones: Ratnākaraśānti’s Engagement with Nāgārjuna, Mādhyamikas, and the Mahāyāna in the Madhyamakālaṃkāravṛtti.” McNamara currently teaches courses on Buddhist philosophy, the intellectual history of India and Tibet, and translation theory for RYI’s BA and MA programs.
