👉Discover 5 powerful exercises guaranteed to whip your fingerpicking hand into shape in record time! FREE PDF GUIDE → www.jonmaclennan.com/fingerstylejumpstart If you sit down and inventory it, bar some natural disaster, the vast majority of your problems in life are caused by other people. The server didn’t get your order right... The mechanic put in the wrong belt... The bass player was too hung over to show up for the mid-day gig. Yet at the same time, we need each other to survive, and relationships are all that ultimately matter. So, this puts us in a catch-22. Learning to manage people in your life is a vital skill. This skill can mean the difference between your peace being disrupted or you experiencing genuine happiness & joy. Same thing applies to music. For example, I’ve worked with a ton of singers over the years who were RELIANT upon musicians for accompaniment. They were great at singing, but without any chords backing them up, they were stranded. This then translated to more stress before a big gig. They’d be up late the night before thinking, “I hope my guitarist shows up tomorrow...” Or, what if one guitarist is playing rhythm and another lead? But then, the lead player flakes. Now, the other person is left staring at a crowd alone, wondering, “What should I play for all the solos?”. The more autonomous you can become as a guitarist, the better. The way to beat this is to always have a hedge. One of the best hedges for playing solo is to learn fingerstyle guitar. With fingerstyle, you can play bass lines, chords, and melodies all at once. You can become like a one-man band. Forget backing tracks, other musicians, or even a looper pedal... and... it works on any guitar. Of course, keep playing with other musicians. Enjoy that too. But fingerstyle can prevent problems and ward off suffering for you in the future.
