The Fugue bounced back in style to take the 2013 Darley Yorkshire Oaks under William Buick for trainer John Gosden at York. The star mare had disappointed on her previous start when finishing last of seven in the Coral Eclipse at Sandown but it had subsequently transpired that she had scoped dirty in the aftermath and thus explaining the poor effort. Racing against her own sex on this occasion, she travelled powerfully on her favoured fast ground as she loomed up to stalk the leaders in the straight. From there, it was a question of what she found when Buick asked for maximum effort and the response was electric as she quickened clear of her toiling rivals for a second career Group 1 success. "It’s lovely to have a nice homebred filly like this," said Gosden in his post-race comments. "I’m happy for her as I thought she’d get very near to the colts in the Eclipse but she was very ill afterwards and that wasn’t her running.
