"Culture and Aesthetics in Contemporary Capitalism" was an online seminar series supported by the SOAS Impact and Knowledge Exchange Fund. It was designed and convened by Dr Rasika Ajotikar, British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow in the department of Development Studies at SOAS. Vivek Chibber is a professor of sociology at New York University. He is the author of Postcolonial Theory and the Specter of Capital and Locked in Place: State-Building and Late Industrialization in India. He launched and is the editor of Catalyst: A Journal of Theory and Strategy since 2017. His most recent book, The Class Matrix: Social Theory after the Cultural Turn, (from Harvard University Press, 2021) engages with cultural theory proposing a fusion of materialism and the most useful insights of its rival. Professor Chibber shows, and I borrow from the description of the book, that it is possible to accommodate the main arguments from the cultural turn within a robust materialist framework. The Class Matrix does not seek to displace culture from the analysis of modern capitalism, but rather, gives culture its due alongside what Marx called “the dull compulsion of economic relations.” His forthcoming book, Confronting Capitalism: How the World Works and How to Change It by Verso elucidates the core dynamics of our economy and politics. It provides a map of how modern capitalism works and lays out a plan for how socialists can overcome the odds and build a democratic and egalitarian future. His talk is titled "Rescuing Class from the Cultural Turn"
