In the mid 1990s it was projected that the magnitude of global blindness would double, from 38 million in 1990 to 76 million by 2020. This projection was based on service levels available at the time and the anticipated population growth and ageing across the world. It highlighted that immediate action was required. In this video we look at how programmes have been implemented in order to address the growing burden of visual impairment and introduce VISION 2020: The Right to Sight, the global initiative to end avoidable blindness. © 2016 International Centre for Eye Health, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
